Privacy mode does exactly what it sounds like, it helps makes using MetaMask more private. Previously, MetaMask automatically injected an Ethereum provider and a Web3 instance for the webpage to use.
With Privacy Mode on by default, websites are now required to request to connect to your MetaMask. Your address will only be exposed when you approve it, via a connect screen like this:
There are still some legacy dapps that have not yet updated to properly interact with privacy mode. If a user still wants to interact with this type of legacy dapp, they will need to disable privacy mode.
How to temporarily disable Privacy Mode
- Select the circular identicon, on the top-right corner of MetaMask
- Click Settings
- Click Security & Privacy
- Click the Privacy mode toggle button
Please note, all sites will continue to see you use MetaMask, and see your public address until you re-enable Privacy Mode!
